OBLIGATION AND NECESSITY
OBLIGATION
Present Obligation: must / have to ==> formula
We use must to talk about internal obligation.
e.g: You must obey your parents.
We use have to (which is not a modal verb) to talk about external obligation.
e.g: You have to go up the stairs as the lift is out of order
Past obligation: had to
We use had to to talk about a past obligation.
e.g: I had to fill in a form to apply for the job.

Necessity ==> Need to/ don't need to: in all cases.

Needn't + infinitive without to: on spesific occasions.
ex: You needn't bring anything to the party.
Needn't have + past participle/didn't need to + infinitive: You did it but it wasn't necessary.
ex: I needn't have bought/ I didn't need to buy any juice. I had three bottles in the cupboard!
Didn't need to + infinitive: You didn't do it because it wasn't necessary.
